Orange Beach, Part 1, Oct 7-9

Thursday, Oct 7 - Orange Beach Bound

Ready, Set, Go!

Fully loaded

We pulled out at 9 am (174,323). Our destination for today is Evergreen, Alabama, south of Montgomery, where we will spend tonight.  We made our usual stops - Trussville Arby's for lunch and Bass Pro just before Montgomery to get our fishing licenses.  We arrived at our Sleep in at Evergreen about 5:15 (174,731).  There is a Zaxby's nearby that we walked to for take out supper and early to bed.
Alabama rest stop

Friday, Oct 8

We left Evergreen about 9:30 local time and crossed the toll bridge to Orange Beach at 11:45.  When we got to the condo, the first thing was to park the boat. We chose to return to Phoenix East 2 where we stayed for several years because they are one of the few condos that will have enough parking for a boat trailer. We were surprised that we were able to check into our unit when we arrived, earlier than the normal checkin time.  We are in PE2. 2041, 4th floor, unit 1, east corner, 3 BR. We are satisfied with the unit and the views.

After unloading, I fixed simple grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch.  That's about all I could muster before grocery shopping.  Laura let us know that Claire's flights were running on time, so we had plenty of time to settle in and get supplies before she arrived around 4:30.  She was in good spirits and hungry when she got here.  We enjoying talking with her and learning more about her life at college.  She and I went for a sunset beach walk before supper.  Supper was loaded baked potatoes, one of her favs. Bill and I added BBQ pork from Moe's to ours.

Laura and Amanda had terrible traffic delays through Chattanooga and again from Birmingham to Montgomery.  They decided to stop in Greenville for the night and will come in tomorrow.

Beach walking pleasures:
Warm gulf waters wash my feet,
Sand sluicing under.

Bill and I started the day with bagels and cream cheese enjoyed on our deck looking over the beach.  Then we took a morning beach walk while Claire slept in.  I enjoyed my encounter first encounter of the trip with a magnificent Great Blue Heron. I never get tired of watching and photographing them.  Below is just one of the 21 pics I took.

Fishing guides lined up at 9 am

Laura and Amanda arrived about 10:30 just as Claire was getting up.  They unpacked and had a quick bit of early lunch before all 3 headed out to the beach for the afternoon.  Bill and I drove to the Greek Market in West Pensacola for some specialty supplies. We especially like the olive oil that they import in bulk.  A 5-L vacuum bag/box is $55 and I got one for me and one for Laura, plus a liter can to use while we are here.

Before supper we went for a sunset walk. The sky was incredible. Sunsets here are amazing displays of color, clouds or not. Laura and the girls made supper- Pasta Alfredo with homemade alfredo sauce. I sauteed fresh gulf shrimp to top the pasta, scampi-style. All of it was delicious.
